Synbiobeta 2024: Biologise the Future

Each year, Synbiobeta brings together a diverse group of experts to explore the future of synthetic biology and its innovation trajectory. The latest event in San Jose, California, was organised around key themes: Human Health, Planetary Health, Tools & Technology, Business of Biology, and Society. This year’s discussions took a systemic approach to technological implementation, encouraging a more planetary perspective in decision-making processes that influence how we conceive and design our technologies.

As part of this agenda, Natsai Chieza joined a panel alongside Orkan Telhan, Chief Information Officer at Ecovative, and Jake Wintermute, Developer Evangelist at Ginkgo Bioworks, to share their insights on how biodesign can shape the next generation of the synthetic biology workforce. She also participated in the Women’s Luncheon, hosted by Synbiobeta’s Director of International Outreach, Fiona Mischel, with Surbhi Sarna, Group Partner at Y Combinator, and Elise Houren, Partner at Build Collective, connecting with inspiring female leaders actively shaping today’s synbio landscape.

While the formal agenda primarily focused on immediate technical innovations and business applications, there were important off-stage conversations that leaned into a more future-facing approach—one that integrates biotechnology into the broader vision of regenerative bioeconomies. Though still emerging and less prominent in the official programming, this dialogue emphasises the need to align technological progress with environmental and societal imperatives.
